Dubrovnik

"Non bene pro toto libertas venditur auro" - "Freedom cannot be sold nor for all the treasures of the world," was the motto of the Republic of Dubrovnik and it is still now. During the tumultuous history of Dubrovnik a lot of authorities influenced on the city, the Byzantines, Saracens, Croatians, Normandy, Venice, small principalities and kingdoms, the Hungarian-Croatian state and the Roman-German Empire, Ottoman, Habsburg and the Napoleonic Empire. However, Dubrovnik has always built its own beauty. This beauty remarked also George Bernard Shaw saying "Those who seek paradise on earth must come to Dubrovnik" thrilled with the city, whose intact city walls, now under UNESCO protection, in an unbroken series of debt even 1 940 meters surround the city which is at home and in the World known as the "Pearl of the Adriatic". Except the walls it is necessary to mention the Stradun, Orlandos column, Gothic and Renaissance palace Sponza, the famous Princes Palace and the beautiful churches and monasteries.

Dubrovnik, the Dalmatian center of the most southern region, is on the top of the most beautiful cities in the world. Dubrovnik is a city with a pleasant Mediterranean climate, 2600 hours of sunshine a year and with its protected nature attracts many celebrities from around the world. The city has a lot of different facilities of which most interesting are museums, galleries, restaurants with delicious Mediterranean specialties, and cafe-bars situated on the Stradun. The diversity and variety of beaches is the main feature of them, from shallow sand or gravel beaches for families with children, romantic and secluded bays, fully equipped famous beaches with entertainment and night sports programs to the quiet coves for diving and exploring. The most famous sandy beach around Dubrovnik is the Šunj beach on the island of Lopud, the ACI marina and a number of Dubrovnik hotel beaches are marked with a blue flag, the most valuable recognition of the ecological preservation of sea purity.

In the vicinity of Dubrovnik is situated a number of other interesting destinations such as the nearby peninsula of Pelješac, which features the famous city of Ston, Solana the saltwork, and its excellent oysters from Ston Bay. Then the island of Korčula, which was built by a sample of fish bones and it is a true urban gem, and apart from the traditional fencing knight game called "Moreška", today it is known as the birthplace of famous Marco Polo. In the far south is the island of Mljet with a Benedictine monastery from the 12th century on an island in the middle of the Great Lake. In front of Dubrovniks archipelago are situated the Elafiti islands which include the islands of Koločep, Lopud and Šipan. The towns of Cavtat and Konavle are one of the most beautiful parts of the Dubrovnik Riviera.
